BIO
João Castro Pinto is a Portuguese composer & sound artist interested in the art of composing silence with sounds.
After several years of activity in the independent rock scene in the early 1990s, Castro Pinto began his creative work as a sound and intermedia artist toward the end of the decade. His artistic output primarily encompasses experimental music, sound design, and intermedia art, approached from a transdisciplinary perspective. His musical work spans soundscape composition, electroacoustic / acousmatic music and noise. He performs live electroacoustic music, both with and without instrumentalists, often in the form of improvised or acousmatic music concerts (spatialization performances). Between 2002 and 2005, João was the artistic director and producer of the Hertzoscópio - Experimental & Transdisciplinary Arts Festival and of the Hertz_extend#1, both events were dedicated to the dissemination of contemporary experimental music, video art, and intermedia.
João composes music for contemporary dance and has developed, since 2021, an ongoing collaboration with the Mimi Garrard Dance Theatre Company (U.S.A.), for which he has been commissioned to compose 21 works to date (here is the playlist of all videodance works featuring João's music).
He graduated in Philosophy from the New University of Lisbon and is concluding a Ph.D. dissertation about soundscape composition at U.C.P. / C.I.T.A.R. - Research Centre for Science and Technology of the Arts.
Castro Pinto's artistic focus lies in the exploration of sonic and / or visual elements, abducted from their original context and recreated in another space-time, aiming to create a profound experience. His work seeks to provoke in the audience an existential glimpse that reflects the need to access the inner space which is, at once, both intimate and transpersonal. The symbolic and plastic research carried out by Castro Pinto in pursuit of this goal functions as a means toward an end that goes beyond the research itself. At stake is a medium that materializes itself in a modus operandi of distension, serving to deconstruct the mechanical automatisms that daily anchor and constrain consciousness, thereby limiting the possibilities of the human perspective and the access to the inner space. The path of artistic experience leading to the discovery or immersion in this inner space constitutes the core of Castro Pinto’s experimental research and practice.
João Castro Pinto is recognized as one of the most prominent Portuguese composers of his generation in the field of acousmatic music, with works that have been distinguished and awarded in multiple international competitions, such as the INA-GRM Banc d’Essai (Selected, France, 2016), DESTELLOS (2nd Prize ex aequo, 2024 | Finalist, 2013, Argentina), MÉTAMORPHOSES (Finalist, 2024, Belgium), MA/IN AWARD (Finalist, 2024, Italy), and ARS ELECTRONICA FORUM WALLIS (Selected, 2025, Switzerland), among others. He has also received national awards, including the YOUNG CREATORS 1999 competition (Music category) and the ERNESTO DE SOUSA FELLOWSHIP 2001. His international distinctions further comprise several artist residencies, notably as guest composer at the Electronic Music Studios of the Metropolitan University of Leeds, United Kingdom (2013). [further information below @ Grants / Fellowships / Artistic Residencies]
In 2018, he created a duo of electroacoustic poetry with researcher and poet Sofia A. Carvalho. The duo’s first work – HIANTE (book-CD / 2019) – was published by Grimaces Éditions (Switzerland). Selected performances of the duo include Lisbon, Geneva, and New York City.
